Planning a Trip to Sri Lanka: Common Questions
The questions travellers ask us most, answered by a local team that runs these routes every week.
See all frequently asked questionsWhen is the best time to visit Sri Lanka?
Sri Lanka is a year-round destination because two separate monsoons hit opposite coasts. December to March is the drier season on the west and south coasts — Colombo, Bentota, Galle and Mirissa — and suits the Cultural Triangle. May to September is the better window for the east coast at Trincomalee, Pasikuda and Arugam Bay. The hill country around Kandy, Nuwara Eliya and Ella stays cool and green for most of the year.
Do I need a visa to travel to Sri Lanka?
Most travellers need an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) approved before arrival, which is applied for online through the official Sri Lankan government portal. Entry rules and fees change from time to time, so confirm the current requirement for your nationality before booking flights. We can point you to the official application page when you book.
Is Sri Lanka safe for tourists?
Sri Lanka is generally a safe destination and tourism operates normally across the island. The usual precautions apply — take care with valuables in crowded places, use licensed transport, and respect dress codes at temples and religious sites. We recommend checking your own government's current travel advice before you travel, and all our tours run with licensed drivers and guides.
How much does a Sri Lanka tour cost?
Our published tour packages currently range from about USD 216 to USD 2658 per person, depending on the length of the trip, the standard of accommodation and the season. Tailor-made itineraries are quoted individually — send us your dates and interests and we will come back with a costed plan, usually within 24 hours.
How many days do you need in Sri Lanka?
Seven to ten days covers the classic circuit comfortably — the Cultural Triangle, Kandy, the hill country and a stretch of coast. Four to five days is enough for a focused trip such as the Cultural Triangle alone or the south coast. Two weeks lets you add the east coast or slow the pace right down. Our itineraries run from 4 to 14 days, and any of them can be extended.
Are your tours private, and do they include a driver and guide?
Most of our tours are private, so you travel with your own vehicle and chauffeur-guide rather than joining a group. Packages include comfortable air-conditioned private transport and a licensed English-speaking driver-guide throughout. Group departures can be arranged on request.
What is included in a Sri Lanka tour package?
Most packages include private air-conditioned transport with a chauffeur-guide, accommodation, daily breakfast and the entrance fees listed in the itinerary. International flights, visa fees, personal expenses and most lunches and dinners are normally excluded. Every package page sets out exactly what is and is not included for that trip.
How do I book a tour with Lanka Travel Gateway?
Choose a package and use the enquiry form, or send us your dates and interests through the Get a Quote page for a tailor-made itinerary. We reply with a costed plan, usually within 24 hours. A small deposit confirms the booking, with the balance due closer to your arrival date.
